Royal Opera House Mood Board/Initial Designs

I am currently taking part in a live brief with the Royal Opera House designing costumes for the ballet "Sleeping Beauty". The directors vision that I chose to base my designs around was called "100 Year Gap" meaning the characters awoke in act 2 in 2013. This page shows a mood board of recent trends from magazines that I could draw inspiration from to design a modern witches costume for the character Carabosse. The lower half of the page shows selection of initial design ideas done in Biro, watercolour and Pro Markers.

Royal Opera House Design Development

Here you will see my design development and final design for the Royal Opera House live brief for the character Carabosse.  Following my mood board and initial design ideas, I decided to turn Carabosse into a modern witch by designing a sharp, striking suit. This suit would be worn in act 2 and would contrast the flamboyant dress that Carabosse would be wearing in act 1 (set in 1913). The media used in my designs are watercolour pencils and paint, Pro Markers and stick on gems.

Royal Opera House Final Illustration

This is a final illustration of my finished garment from the Royal Opera House live brief for the character Carabosse. This illustration has been done in Pro Marker pens and black ink with swatches of the fabrics I used in my garment.

Royal Opera House Final Garment

Here are four photographs of my final garment for the Royal Opera House live brief. I personally did the hair and make-up, along with taking the photographs with a DSLR camera. My suit is made out of faux leather and matte velvet with fake barbed wire and silver studs with a spotted lace bralet underneath. I have carefully selected this design and the fabrics to portray a modern powerful woman to fit with the '100 Year Gap' directors vision. 

Elizabethan Research

In my own time, I have created a scrapbook on personal interests. I have researched aspects of the Elizabethan era to inspire me to design some modern garments. I have combined some images of royal  dresses, armour and recent collections derived from the period along with relevant fabric samples.

Elizabethan Initial Designs

Here are six initial design ideas done in my personal scrapbook inspired by aspects of the Elizabethan era such as royal dresses and men's armour. I have taken inspiration from the silhouettes, metal in the armour and the trimmings and fabrics used on royal dresses.

Watercolour Painting

This is a piece of artwork that I have done in my spare time inspired by the artist Aygness Cecile. I have lightly used a 3B pencil to get a vague outline of a girls face followed by watercolour to create a dripping and splattered effect. When the piece was finished I scanned it into photoshop to adjust the levels and curves to make the colours appear more vibrant.

Floral Print Research

This is a double page spread taken out of my 'Floral Print' sketchbook. As part of one of the requirements for this brief, I researched various textiles designers, one of which was Celia Birtwell. I created a collage of various prints as a background, wrote conclusions of my findings about her and then drew a replica of one of her prints using black fine liner (shown on the bottom right and left hand corners).

Floral Print Mood Board/Designs

For my 'Floral Print' brief, I decided to base my design ideas around paisley print. Using Photoshop, I collated inspirational images of prints and garments to help me produce my own print designs. You will see down the left, right and centre of the page are three print design ideas I have drawn in fine liner pen and scanned in. One of these I will select to print on two sarongs using a closed screen and a heat press.

Vintage Lingerie Mood Board

One of the briefs that I am currently working on in college is on vintage lingerie. This mood board on 1920's lingerie has been created on Photoshop and then printed to add relevant fabric and lace trimming samples and to add silhouette drawings.

These are a selection of my initial design ideas for the vintage lingerie project I am currently working on done in fine liner pen. Four of these designs will be selected to develop and then create into garments.

Hollywood Costume Final Garment

In the first year of my BTEC, one of our briefs was to design a costume for a character in a Hollywood film. This is my final dress for the character Sugar Kane in 'Some Like It Hot'. It is made from crepe, lace, fringing with beads and bound around the edges. I styled and photographed my costume in a photography studio using a DSLR camera and uploaded the images onto Photoshop to create this page.

My final illustration of my Hollywood costume garment for the film 'Some Like It Hot' has been done in ink and Pro Marker and then scanned into photoshop to add a background and to put the lace panels in.

Decades Research/Designs

The final project of the first year of my BTEC was based on decades. After briefly researching each decade between the 1900's to present day, I decided to research the 1910's in more depth to enable me to design an outfit to suit the era. This page shows some of my research pages from my sketchbook that look into historical aspects of the era such as menswear and designers and also a range of my initial design ideas done in watercolour, felt tip pen and fine liner.

Decades Final Illustration

My final illustration of my Decades garment is done in watercolour paints, fine liner pen and ink to create a more stylized image of my dress.

Decades Final Garment

Here are three photos of my final garment from my decades project. The dress and jacket are made out of a woven polyester tweed fabric with lace trimmings. My inspiration when designing this outfit came from the Paul Poiret hobble skirts that were fashionable in the 1910's. After taking these photographs in a photography studio with a DSLR camera, I uploaded them into Photoshop to edit them and insert a background. 

'On The Move' Final Images

For my AS Photography, our first project was called 'On The Move'. These are a selection of my final images that are inspired by the light drawing artist collective Litchfaktor. These photos were taken in a photography studio using a DLSR camera (on a slow shutter speed), a torch and coloured acetate.
